Baltimore City Council is set to investigate the massive coal explosion that rocked our community and beyond back in December of 2021. No explanation for the cause of the explosion has been offered by CSX. Long before the recent explosion residents have reported coal dust on the exterior and interior of their homes to city and state officials but the problem has gone unaddressed. The terminal, which exports coal overseas, sits approximately 1,000 feet from Curtis Bay’s recreation. Residents have long questioned how it can be acceptable to allow a highly combustible material to be handled in large volumes in close proximity to what is intended to be a safe place for children to play.
We encourage all concerned residents of Curtis Bay and beyond to attend this critical hearing to voice your questions, concerns and experiences with the explosion and living alongside an open air coal pile. The upcoming hearing is an open, public meeting established to give everyone an opportunity to speak out.
